Jewel Lee-Johnson
Jewel Lee-Johnson is a multidisciplinary artist, 3D designer, and DJ working across game development, animation, audiovisual performance, and creative technology. A graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) with a BFA in Film/Animation/Video and a concentration in Computers, Technology, and Culture. Her practice explores memory, identity, architecture, and sound. Her approach is heavily influenced by video games, film, and the ways digital and physical spaces can hold narrative, memory, and identity.
Music and sound are central to her practice. Drawing from Afrofuturism, club music especially in the realm of freetek, ghettotech, sampling/early 2000s hiphop, and experimental electronic and noise. She places a large emphasis on highlighting BIPOC creatives and digging into worlds outside the mainstream. She is interested in challenging the often narrow and conventional perspectives by creating and exploring new ways of representing Black spaces and experiences.
