We Make the Road: OPEN CALL

Vox Populi Gallery is hosting a fundraiser show for radical Philly education project W.E.B. Du Bois Movement School for Abolition and Reconstruction -- lovingly known as Abolition School -- in support of their ongoing political education program. The show will run March 6 through March 29, with programming throughout. We invite artists and activists to contribute visual art and movement artifacts to the show.

The show's title pulls from Paulo Friere and Myles Horton's 1990 "spoken book" We Make the Road by Walking, a meditation on the role of participatory learning in the development of radical social movements. That text in turn borrows from Antonio Machado's 1912 poem-turned-proverb Caminante, no hay camino -- "Traveler, there is no road / the road is made by walking."  We particularly welcome submissions that engage in some way with the laborious and liberating project of creating a path forward that has never existed before.

Submissions can take a variety of forms, ranging from drawings, paintings, prints, and photographs to poems, textiles, protest signs, custom T-shirts, zines, and more. As a rule, submissions should be 18" x 24" or smaller, and able to be mounted to a wall. There will be limited capacity for larger pieces. All selected donations will be sold through a raffle system with 100% of proceeds going to Abolition School; artists set reserve price through this submission form.

The deadline to submit your proposal is February 15, 11:59 pm Artists will receive notice of their acceptance into the show by February 20. This is quick turnaround; using existing work is great! If you're planning to create a new piece for the show, please submit a sketch or work-in-progress image in the photo upload section of this form. All other details (artist, title, year, medium, dimensions) should be final. Artists may choose to include their name in the show materials or to donate work anonymously. Dropoff will take place between February 22 and March 1. Curators will handle installation of the artwork. The show's opening reception will take place on Friday March 6th.

We deeply appreciate all submissions!! Thank you so much for supporting this project.
