ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
Arrivals and Departures, ascending and descending - the rise and fall of culture within the context of nature is the musing of a new multimedia installation from artist Brent Wahl. Playing off of his frequent use of architecture, fabrication, and ephemeral materials, Brent will incorporate motion, surveillance, and sound in this go around at Vox. This installation, based loosely on the model of a Zoetrope, will create a simple, but fatefully looped environment, that the visitor will be able to watch unfold, but not take part in. Like the prisoners in Plato's Cave, the observer will also be privy to projections of imagery on a wall, but instead of reality being shifted as it is cast as shadow, they will encounter a fabricated view of history, nature, and pop culture being cast as reality.
Wahl received his MFA from The University of Pennsylvania in 2005. He lives and works in Philadelphia, where he teaches at the University of Pennsylvania School of Design. This is Brent's third solo show at Vox Populi. Recent exhibition venues include X-Initiative (New York, NY), The Dumbo Arts Center (Brooklyn, NY), Slought Foundation (Philadelphia, PA), Repetti Gallery (Long Island City, NY), and Publico (Cincinnati, OH).
