Black Box Presents: Voices of the Mexican Diaspora

Black Box Presents: Voices of the Mexican Diaspora

In Partnership with Philadelphia Latino Arts & Film Festival (PHLAFF)

Thursday, December 11, 2025, FREE Doors at 7PM

Black Box Presents: Voices of the Mexican Diaspora brings Vox Populi and the Philadelphia Latino Film Festival (PHLAFF) together for an evening of contemporary cinema examining the lived experiences, histories, and community power of the Mexican diaspora. Co-curated with and hosted by Erick Barragán, the program features short and feature-length works that navigate labor, memory, migration, and collective organizing across Mexico City, Puebla, and Philadelphia.

The screening will feature:
Mi Querida Escandón (dir. Héctor Tapia)
Made in America (dir. Edgar Aquino Huerta)
Wham! (dir. Sandra Manzanares)
La Sal de Mi Tierra (dir. Antonio Arroniz Castro)
Expanding Sanctuary (dir. Kristal Sotomayor)

Spanning documentary, narrative, and experimental horror, these works offer grounded portraits of daily life and the forces that shape it—from inherited craft traditions to food and cultural memory, to the politics of sanctuary. Together, they trace the textures of work, the making of home across borders, and the ways communities build resilience in the face of systemic pressures.

With a total runtime of approximately 127 minutes, the program will be hosted by Erick Barragán, who will lead a brief conversation following the screening.

About PHLAFF

The Philadelphia Latino Arts & Film Festival (PHLAFF) is committed to uplifting emerging and established Latine/x/a/o creatives and filmmakers by showcasing the richness, complexity, and cultural breadth of our communities. Through a year-round constellation of programs, PHLAFF advances cross-cultural dialogue, fosters inclusive storytelling, and contributes to a more equitable cultural landscape.

PHLAFF exists for us—by us. We’re a cultural home for Latine/x/a/o creatives and audiences to share stories, connect across generations, and dream new futures together. Our mission is to celebrate our shared heritage while creating opportunities for artists to thrive and communities to unite through the power of film, food, music, and more.

About Black Box Presents

Made possible through lead support by the William Penn Foundation, Black Box Presents is a yearlong series transforming our Black Box Performance Theater into a platform for 12 community arts organizations, each curating their own monthly event. This initiative amplifies experimental music, dance, film, and spoken word while ensuring free, accessible programming that strengthens Philadelphia’s creative networks.
