“Collective Futures” Coming Soon!
Collective Futures, a six-week, citywide collaborative project, will activate Philadelphia’s network of artist-run spaces, DIY venues, and community-based initiatives from October 2 through November 15, 2026. Spanning neighborhoods from Kensington and North Chinatown to West Philadelphia, Fishtown, and Old City, the project brings together more than 40 independent spaces and organizations through exhibitions, performances, workshops, and public programs. Collective Futures centers collective practice as a vital mode of cultural production and community building. Across disciplines and contexts, the project highlights how artists come together to build shared platforms, experiment with new forms, and sustain creative communities.
Taking place during the Semiquincentennial, Collective Futures enters a moment when many institutions in Philadelphia are centering programming around complex histories of nation-building and democracy. Against that backdrop, Collective Futures foregrounds the artistic experimentation and alternative models that grassroots cultural spaces have long been building, highlighting the enduring power of self-organizing.
Collective Futures is grounded in the specific conditions of Philadelphia, where a rich ecosystem of artist-run and DIY spaces has made collaborative cultural production possible. As rising costs and development reshape the city, the project affirms the importance of collective cultural life and the infrastructures that sustain it, so that our work can mobilize resources, deepen connections, and envision transformative futures.

Selected Programs and Exhibitions
Many participating projects will host opening receptions during First Fridays (October 2, November 6) and Second Thursdays (October 8, November 12). Over the course of six weeks, participating venues will present a range of programming including:
October 1st: Opening Party
October 24–25: Parallel Play Symposium hosted at Asian Arts Initiative. Two days of panel discussions and hands-on workshops exploring collective practice.

October, 2–November 15: An Endless Meeting: Collective Process, Artistic Labor, and the Politics of Working Together at Vox Populi
October 9–11: PRINT TIME AFTER TIME, a weekend-long gathering around print culture, ending with a Sunday print fair. Organized by FORTUNE at Icebox Project Space
October 8–November 15: Eight collectives will open exhibitions at Icebox Project Space, built out to look like a mall.
October 8–November 7: Soft Crash, featuring Johannes Barfield and curated by Stephanie J Woods, at Tiger Strikes Asteroid Philadelphia
November 13: Obvious Agency will host Philadelphia Arts Workers United, a day long convening for building power across medium, position, and sector.
