ABOUT THE EXHIBITION

The Portrait of Jack Goldstein is a five minute video in whi8ch Goldstein’s own the Portrait of Pere Tanguy (in which a reproduction of Van Gogh’s painting serves as the template) is played backwards and traced (or, more precisely, incompletely traced, as the source undoes itself before it can be thoroughly drawn over). It is a portrait of a portrait of appropriation; of support and influence; of the aura of mourning embedded in the resuscitative act of quotation.
