ABOUT THE EXHIBITION

Salt is a talisman. Salt is a mirror. Salt is a weapon. In HERE WHERE THE BODY KNOWS IT CAN HURT, Vox Populi’s 21st Annual Juried Exhibition, the group ruminates on the paradox of foodcraft. Curated by Gregory Donell Parker, the pieces move in the negative space between recipe, sculpture, language, tradeskill, and performance. The artists reckon the shape of stamina with the fragility of our global food/labor networks. Perhaps, there is power in the tongue, yes, but more so in the spit. Perhaps, in the martial art of service, we all must become more ambidextrous. Hospitality disembodied. Impolite mastication. Say Grace (this time with feeling). All fours in the dirt and call it honor. Make it hot. Make it to stay.

ABOUT THE CURATOR

Gregory Donell Parker is a writer, interdisciplinary artist, and editor from PG County, Maryland currently based in Philadelphia, PA. His practice is an object of confession; bruised pitiful by queer poiesis, devotion, and applause. A blank page, he writes: ‘EVERYTHING IS STILL SO EMBARRASSINGLY ABOUT YOU.’ He is currently an artist member of Vox Populi gallery, collaborating on in house exhibitions and other curatorial projects.
