ABOUT THE ARTIST
ShrapKnel, which is made up of Pennsylvania-born, Brooklyn-based PremRock and Brooklyn-born, Philly-based Curly Castro, is a subgroup of the Wrecking Crew, a Philadelphia collective started in 2010 by rapper-producer Zilla Rocca. That connection sizzles in every ShrapKnel song; they seem telepathically connected, able to anticipate and augment each other’s ideas. Vocally, they couldn’t sound more different: Prem has a smoky, whiskey-soaked voice that gives his literary and philosophical beat poetry a world-weary heft. Castro, meanwhile, snarls through every verse, weaving sports references, rap homages, and Black radical tradition into precise rhythmic volleys that recall dancehall and reggae. There’s a distinct push and pull, an interplay of fluid and staccato, a heady meeting of fire and ice.
