On July 17th at Vox Populi, FORTUNE presents Moving into Major Heat (大暑)
Together, we'll move through qigong led by Chloe Wang, to settle the body's fire and circulate calm. We'll share cooling herbs and beverages to carry with you, and fans to take into the summer streets. Throughout the evening, we'll be guided by a FORTUNE-made zine compiling writings, resources, and reprints from people whose lived experience and expertise illuminate what it means to survive and thrive in the heat.
We enter 大暑 (Dàshǔ), or "Major Heat," on July 23rd, the twelfth of the twenty-four 节气 (Jiéqì) that structure the traditional Chinese lunisolar calendar. Each Jiéqì marks a subtle shift in the year's energy and climate; Dàshǔ is the most sweltering stretch of summer, the peak of the year's accumulated heat. In anticipation of this seasonal threshold, FORTUNE gathers in Vox Populi's Black Box theater to lean into this heat, transforming a hot room into a space for shimmering reflection, and cooling.
When we think of heat, and resilience, we must contend with climate change, and recognize that rising temperatures are never felt equally. Extreme heat is hardest on low-income and disabled communities, elders, outdoor workers, unhoused people, and neighborhoods stripped of trees and shade by decades of disinvestment and racist planning. Heat is an environmental condition, and a political one. With this framing, we've designed the evening's offerings as ways to strategize, prepare, and practice moving in and through heat.
CLOTHING OPTIONAL — SHOES OFF — MASKS ON
COVID Safety (please read):
This is a COVID-cautious gathering that requires all attendees to wear KN95 or higher quality masks throughout the duration of the evening, and to take a rapid COVID test on the day of the event. We will provide masks and tests at the door, and ask that attendees either bring a photo of a negative test or arrive at least 15 minutes before the start of the event if testing upon arrival. The venue will be hot and we want folks to stay hydrated – briefly unmasking when actively drinking water is allowed, and there will be a small outdoor space available to take breaks from masking. We ask that you please refrain from attending if you are feeling sick or have been recently exposed to somebody who has tested positive for COVID. We will have air purifiers staggered throughout the space.
Honoring these COVID precautions will make it possible for more members of our community to gather with us as COVID continues to impact our health and safety. We hope that learning how to cool our bodies while wearing a mask can help us build resilience as we move through a world with increasing heat, pollution, and respiratory illness.

Accessibility:
Vox Populi is located on the third floor of a historic warehouse building at 319 N. 11th Street. There will be a sandwich board on the sidewalk identifying the building entrance, and attendees may use the buzzer labeled “Vox” next to the doorway to get access into the building.
There are five steps with a railing leading from the street-level to the first-floor landing, and ramp access into the building entrance can be coordinated prior to the event. There are wooden stairs with a railing and dim lighting leading up from the landing to the third floor, as well as an elevator with an entry 29-inches wide that may not accommodate all wheelchairs or motorized chairs. Two single stall all-gender bathrooms are available for use, and both can fit mobility devices and wheelchairs but do not have railings.
Attendees can check in and take COVID tests at the entrance to Vox Populi on the third floor of the building, and the event will take place in the Black Box to the left of Vox Populi’s lobby area. The event venue has standing and overhead fans but no A/C, so please come prepared for a very hot environment. There are small outdoor balconies between landings to take a breath, though these spaces can only accommodate a couple of people at a time, will not have seating, and folks may encounter outside traffic from people passing through. The building hallways will have bright overhead lighting, and the workshop venue will be dimly lit with warm colored lights. Metal folding chairs, wide wooden benches, and floor cushions will be available for use. Speakers will use microphones when presenting and facilitating the qigong workshop.
This is not a fragrance-free event. There will not be ASL interpretation or CART available for this event, and all event materials and announcements will be in English.
An access coordinator will be available to support attendees throughout the course of the evening. If you have questions about how and whether we can accommodate your needs, we invite you to email us at printingfortunes@gmail.com prior to the day of the event. We welcome all feedback and hope to make this event as comfortable and accessible as possible!
