Elliot R. Engles
Elliot R. Engles (b. 1996, Memphis, TN) is a painter and chronic dabbler. While studying Studio Art at the University of Memphis as an undergraduate he was awarded an Honors Research Fellowship to study Additive Manufacturing in Ceramics, despite being a complete luddite and hater of technology. In 2024 he received his Masters of Fine Art in Painting from Tyler School of Art and Architecture, where he alienated his peers and professors but managed to receive the Project Completion Grant for his impressive collection of pornography and his forays into esoteric masturbation and American exceptionalism.
Engles’ work explores queer embodiment, identity, historic buggery, and the inherent homoeroticism of boats and the water. While he identifies as a painter, his practice takes him on constant detours through fiber, photography, performance, writing, and time travel. Recently he’s been really into tying knots. He currently lives aboard the Barkentine Gazela, where he also works as a deckhand and brightwork specialist.
