Vox Populi is pleased to announce its August exhibitions. Featured in the galleries are Vox artists Anita Allyn and Kate Stewart; new Vox member Jacque Liu; and a guest exhibition by Reanimation Library. The Video Lounge features work by Brooklyn-based artist Celeste Fichter.

Anita Allyn, Islanders
Allyn showcases new photographic large format prints along with a site-specific wall installation. The imagery intertwines fun yet dangerous iconographies of utopias.

Kate Stewart, les abattoirs
Les abbatoirs literally translates to mean “the slaughterhouse.” In this new series of work, Stewart uses collage and installation to explore the psychology of violence and sex, and the aestheticization of both in our culture. Reference points for this new body of work are press coverage of Lynndie England, Francis Bacon paintings, the Marquis de Sade, and lingerie catalogs.

New member Jacque Liu, Chasing Paper
Travel has played an important role in Jacque Liu’s life. Much of his work - whether site-specific installation or graphite lines on paper or constructing lines with paper itself - stems from a desire to understand the notion of place. To understand place, Liu’s eye gravitates to a more microcosmic scale, often focusing on architectural elements, such as windows, doors, vents, staircases, chairs and abandoned houses in the vastness of a cityscape. His work becomes an abstraction of details within the encountered landscapes.

Guest exhibition: Reanimation Library: Center City Branch
The Reanimation Library is a small, independent library based in Brooklyn, New York. It is a collection of books that have fallen out of mainstream circulation. Outdated and discarded, they have been culled from thrift stores, stoop sales, and throw-away piles across the country and given new life as resource material for artists, writers, and other cultural archeologists.

Center City Branch is a temporary manifestation of the Reanimation Library that will be open to the public for three weeks in August at Vox Populi. It will be assembled from books found in thrift stores and libraries across Philadelphia and will be available for artists to work with during regular gallery hours. The books at Center City Branch will not circulate, but the library will be equipped with a small photocopier and scanners to facilitate text and image harvesting. Over the course of the show, projects that are created from the library will be presented in the gallery space.

Video Lounge: Celeste Fichter, The Lost Episodes
The Lost Episodes (2009) is a single-channel 9 minute 30 second video anthology of micro-narratives that use humor, word play and puns to animate the inanimate. While collectively each episode addresses a particular foible or folly that suggest they are part of a larger sequence, they are independent and in fact their own short stories.
